Giving the tithe is acknowledging that everything we have comes from the Lord. It means giving back to God a small part of everything he pours into our lives. When we have a grateful heart we offer and tithe with joy.
Money is neither good nor bad: it is neutral. That means that with it we can do both good things and bad things. If we love money, the truth is that we do not love God. Matthew 6:24 says, “No one can serve two masters, for he will despise one and love the other, or love one dearly and despise the other. You cannot serve God and riches at the same time.”
When we are able to give God part of our money with an absolute peace of mind, we are trusting him and breaking the power of money in our lives.
How much should you give?
Whether it’s for spiritual reasons or not, that’s the question facing many Christians today. Tithing and offering have been part of the church since its beginning, but more and more people are questioning whether or not it’s necessary in modern times. This article explores the verses about tithes and offerings from both the Old and New Testaments to show why giving generously to God matters now more than ever before.
Tithes and Offerings in the Bible
2 Corinthians 9:6-7
Bring the full tithe for the temple funds, and then there will be food in my house. Test me in this, says the Lord Almighty, and see if I do not open the floodgates of heaven and pour out blessing upon you until it overflows.
Some give hand over fist, and receive more than they give; others don’t even pay their debts, and end up in misery.
Jesus sat in front of the place where the offerings were deposited, and he was watching how the people put their coins in the temple’s boxes. Many rich people put in large amounts. But a poor widow came and dropped two small coins of very little value.
Jesus called his disciples and said to them, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. They gave out of what was left over; but she, out of her poverty, put in all that she had, all her sustenance ».
1 Corinthians 16:2a
On the first day of the week, each of you set aside and put aside some money according to your income…
The tithe of every product of the field, whether grain from the fields or fruit from the trees, belongs to the Lord, since it is consecrated to him.
Give, and it will be given to you: a full measure, pressed down, shaken, and running over, will be poured into your lap. Because with the measure that you measure to others, it will be measured to you”.
Therefore, if you have not been honest in the use of worldly riches, who will trust you with the true ones? And, if you have not been honest with what belongs to others, who will give you what belongs to you?
Honor the Lord with your riches and with the first fruits of your crops. So your barns will be filled to bursting and your cellars will overflow with new wine.
With my example I have shown them that it is necessary to work hard to help those in need, remembering the words of the Lord Jesus: “There is more joy in giving than in receiving”.
Therefore, imitate God, as beloved children, and lead a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.
You will not be able to eat in your cities the tithe of your wheat, your wine or your oil, nor the firstborn of your cattle and your flocks, nor what you have promised to give, nor your freewill offerings nor your contributions. You will enjoy them in the presence of the Lord your God, in the place he chooses. So also will your son and your daughter, your slave and your slave, and the Levites who live in your cities, and you will rejoice before the Lord your God for the achievements of your work
Every year, without fail, you will set aside a tenth of everything your fields produce. In the presence of the Lord your God you shall eat the tenth part of your wheat, your wine and your oil, and of the firstborn of your herds and flocks; you will do it in the place where he decides to live. Thus you will learn to always fear the Lord your God.
2 Chronicles 31:5
As soon as the order was given, the Israelites gave in abundance the first fruits of wheat, wine, oil, honey and all the products of the field. They also gave abundantly a tenth of everything.
We agreed to bring to the storehouses of the temple of our God the first fruits of our milling, of our offerings, of the fruit of our trees, of our new wine, and of our oil, for the priests who minister in the temple of our God. We also agreed to give a tenth of our crops to the Levites, since they are the ones who collect all this in the towns where we work.
May the Lord answer you when you are in distress; May the name of the God of Jacob protect you. May he send you help from the sanctuary; may he support you from Zion. May he remember all your offerings; accept your holocausts.
Burn leavened bread as a thank offering and proclaim freewill offerings. Let everyone know, Israelites; that’s what you guys love! says the Almighty Lord.
Therefore, if you are presenting your offering at the altar and there you remember that your brother has something against you, leave your offering there in front of the altar. Go first and reconcile with your brother; then he comes back and presents your offering.
Do not accumulate for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and rust destroy, and where thieves break in to steal. Rather, lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust eat away, nor thieves break in to steal. Because where your treasure is, there your heart will be too.
