Our culture enjoys hustle, stress, and lack of sleep as a badge of honor. As regularly reported in the news, more than half of Americans do not use allotted vacation days and are likely to bring work when they go on vacation. Work gives our identity the hustle and bustle that ensures our status.
Stimulants (caffeine and sugar, for example) provide the means to get moving in the morning, while sleeping pills, alcohol, and natural remedies allow us to forcibly shut down our bodies and minds for a dream. flashing before starting because, as the motto goes, “You can sleep when you’re dead.”
But is this what God intended when he created man in his image? What is the significance of God having worked for six days and then rested? In this study we will explain everything in detail. Resting in God can free us from all our burdens.

What is resting in God?
Resting in God requires us to recognize that the Lord is in control and not us. This shift in understanding rest as dependence on God and regard for His provision, love, and care in contrast to our pursuit of independence, identity, and purpose through work has important physical implications, but also critical spiritual foundational importance.
Why is rest important for Christians?
God established the pattern of night and day, and the rhythm of work and rest before the Fall, creating a structure of life and order in which work provides purpose in practice but meaning through relationship. .
After the Fall, our need for this structure is even greater as we seek to find our purpose through our work and in our independence from a relationship with God.
But beyond this functional recognition is the eternal design in which we yearn for the restoration and redemption of our bodies “to be freed from their slavery to corruption and to obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God” ( Romans 8: 21 ).
These little patterns of rest (Sabbath) provide the space in which we are free to reflect on the gift of God’s provision of life, purpose, and salvation. Our attempt to identify ourselves through work is but a snapshot of our attempt to identify and save ourselves as independent of God.
It is not possible to earn our salvation, but through grace we are saved, not by our works, but as a gift from our God ( Ephesians 2: 8-9 ). We can rest in God because the work of our salvation was carried out on the cross ( Ephesians 2: 13-16 ).
What Happened After the Resurrection
When Jesus said, “It is finished ” ( John 19:30 ), He provided the final word regarding the work of redemption. The seventh day is a reminder of a perfect relationship with God. The resurrection of Christ established a new order of creation, giving us the opportunity to rest in God.
Our temptation today is the same temptation offered to Adam and Eve in the Garden, Will we begin to rest in God and trust His provision and care, depending on Him, or will we try to control our lives with useless independence, seeking meaning through our hustle and bustle?
Resting in God may seem like an intangible luxury in a chaotic world like the one we live in, but by surrendering control to a loving Creator we demonstrate our dependence on God for all things, temporal and eternal.
We can recognize our need for Jesus for eternal salvation, but until we also relinquish control of our identity , then we will not truly rest. We must rest in God and put all our trust in him to have true rest.
We can rest in God when the world is upside down because He loves us and we can depend on Him. “Have not you heard? Haven’t you heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. Don’t faint or get tired ; his understanding is inscrutable. He gives strength to the weary, and to the one who has none ”( Isaiah 40: 28-29 ).
How to rest in God
The Lord wants us to enjoy our daily life. John 10:10 says that Jesus died for us so that we can have life and have it abundantly. But it seems that many people who claim to believe in Jesus are not really enjoying their lives.
It is tragic to think that Jesus paid the price for our sins, that he suffered to make that sacrifice, and yet there are Christians who are struggling just to get by each day without resting in God. To truly live God’s rest:
1. Let the amazing grace of God make your life easier
The key to having abundant life in Christ is living by the grace of God through faith, that is, resting in God. Because grace is His power working in us, enabling us to do whatever it takes in life.
When we try to do everything in our own power and leave God out of the equation , we just get tired and frustrated by our mistakes and failures. But when we lean on God, we really enter His rest and can enjoy our lives, no matter what our circumstances are. Hebrews 4: 9-11 says:
Then, there remains a rest for the people of God, because whoever has entered God’s rest, has also rested from his works as God rested from his. Therefore, let us strive to enter that rest.
Now, the rest of God is not a rest from work, it is a rest from work. To rest in God is to partner with Him to do what He calls you to do by His grace, and to leave the part that you cannot do in His hands, trusting that He will do it. Hebrews 4: 3 says it like this:
Because those of us who have believed enter that rest, so we begin by believing.
2. Don’t try faith, live it
When you try to believe, you have not begun to rest in God. But when you believe, you have complete rest in Him. Living by faith is not a struggle, it is rest. And you can enter God’s rest in every area of your life.
The stress in your life is caused by the way you approach your circumstances and the attitude you have towards them. You suffer a tipping point when you realize that the world will probably never change, but you learn to change the way you handle situations that are challenging.
One key to this is knowing that, as believers in Christ, we can rest in God: we have a part and He has a part in everything He calls us to do. When we do not do the part that we can do and try to execute what is God’s responsibility, it is when we live stressed with worry, fear, anxiety, frustration , without peace and without joy.
The reason this happens sometimes is because we think that God needs our help. We meditate on the problem, turning it over and over in the mind, worrying, trying to figure out how things should work. It is as if we were saying to God:
” I think you need my help and I’m not sure you can handle this situation, sir .”
We need to realize that worrying is useless ! It’s like sitting in a rocking chair, rocking all day, exhausting yourself and getting nowhere. Resting in God by trusting in Him means that we renounce worry, reasoning, and anxiety and enter His rest with simple, childlike faith: we live by grace through faith!

3. Live by grace and enjoy God’s rest
Ephesians 2: 8-9 is a great scripture that says we are saved by grace through faith . And we walk our relationship with God and His plans for our lives in the same way that we receive salvation: by grace through faith.
This is possible because Jesus made the perfect sacrifice for us when he gave his life, taking our guilt and condemnation and paying for our sins. Through a personal relationship with Jesus, we access God’s grace so that we can do what He calls us to do.
It is so amazing to know that God is always with us, giving us His grace for everything we need to do in life. Trust in God’s unconditional love for you today. Do what you can and give it everything else. And when you’re feeling frustrated or overwhelmed, like you can’t do it anymore, remember to stop, rest in God, and put your trust in Him.
Why did God rest on the seventh day?
The first chapter of Genesis records God’s creative activity during the six days of creation. Then chapter two begins with a note about the seventh day:
“ By the seventh day God had finished the work that He had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it he rested from all the work of creation that he had done “( Genesis 2: 2-3 ).
It is tempting to read this passage and visualize God relaxing and taking a nap. However, God rested to offer us a specific order in the work day. The Lord, from the beginning of time has known what is necessary for us, we need to have rules, if not, we can turn everything into chaos, and this is no secret to anyone.
God’s rest was disturbed by the fall of man
In the second chapter of Genesis, God established a garden in Eden, an ordered paradise. Inside the garden he put a caretaker, Adam, to take care of the garden. God Himself is in the garden, walking and talking with Adam. This garden represents the rest of God . And humanity, in the beginning, is at rest with the Lord.
Resting in God is not relaxation . Adam has a job to do in the garden. But he is in the presence of the Lord, in the garden, where everything is ordered and in peace. You are experiencing God’s rest.
But in the third chapter of Genesis, Adam rebelled against God and was thrown out of the garden. His rest was over . Now your work will be hard. The order of the garden was replaced by a world that will require a lot of effort to survive. A world of disorder. Resting in God was just a memory, until Jesus Christ came into the world and filled us with grace.

How can we enter God’s rest?
Hebrews seems to have been written by a pastor for his congregation. And in Hebrews 3: 7-4: 11 he warns not to stray. His warning against apostasy is beyond the scope of this article. The generation that came out of Egypt repeatedly tested God with their disobedience. And so God swore that they would never enter his rest.
In Hebrews 4: 1 it is commented that the promise of entering God’s rest still stands. The generation that came out of Egypt could not enter. And although Joshua took them to Canaan, they could not enter God’s rest ( Hebrews 4:78 ). So there are still those who will enter that rest ( Hebrews 4: 6 ).
So who will enter that break? The author of Hebrews understands that those who believe will rest in God ( Hebrews 4: 3 ). God’s rest, first expressed in Genesis and promised to Abraham and Israel, is still available to all who believe.
What is God’s rest?
Resting in God is not relaxing and avoiding all tasks . It is still a time of activity and work. It is a state, or place, where God governs and manages his creation, free from the chaos and disorder caused by sin and rebellion.
All those who stop exercising control over work or their own life and turn it over to their creator, can rest in God. This does not mean that we should avoid work but that it is necessary to do it without eagerness and trusting that God will provide the best for us.
A Prayer to rest in the Lord
Lord, please calm my anxiety. Father, you say in Philippians 4: 6-8 , don’t be anxious about anything. And yet I have not yet managed to control this. God, you are Jehovah Rapha, the God who heals. And you are Jehovah Jireh, the God who meets the needs. Help me to meditate on your truths, so that I don’t get distressed.
Help me to rest in You, Lord , and to remember that You are sovereign and in control of everything. Even when the going gets tough, Lord, You are bigger than any problem I may have.
Father, sometimes I can’t rest because what I’m facing seems impossible. And yet you tell me in Luke 18:27 that things that are impossible for men are possible with you. In fact, you love it when you solve the impossible. So there’s no question who did it. It had to be You.
God, you tell me in John 14: 1 that I must not allow my heart to be troubled. Father, help me to think of you and how great you are when circumstances begin to overwhelm me.
You are Almighty God. The one who hung every star in its place. He who knows each one by name as Isaiah 40:26 says . Lord, you are the one who never tires. You give me strength when I’m tired. When I feel weak, you will give me power. Help me remember that your power is endless. Amen.
Brother, you can rest in God and know that this rest will give you the peace you need. You do not have to worry about your circumstances at work, home or the world, God is your caregiver and He is the one who can solve all your problems. Don’t let your burdens overwhelm you; Give them to God and let Him take care of them. Trust me, you will be better and feel safe wherever you are.
