God is love Verses – Bible study of 1 John 4:7-9

Spread the love

In this article, we bring a detailed explanation of God is love Verses.

In 1 John 4:8, we find a wonderful truth about our God: He is love! The almighty, eternal God, Creator of the universe, is love. What does that mean? That this is his nature and everything he does is driven by love.

Understanding that God sent his Son Jesus into the world as a sign of his love for all of us, as we read in 1 John 4:9, transforms us. There is, and never will be, a greater expression of love than the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross!

God is love Verses

Let’s examine the passage from 1 John 4:7-9.

Dear brothers, let us love one another, because love comes from God, and everyone who loves has been born from him and knows him. He who does not love does not know God, because God is love. Thus God manifested his love among us: in that he sent his only begotten Son into the world that we might live through him.
(1 John 4:7-9)

1st John 4:7, the origin of love

Dear brothers, let us love one another

Dear brothers, let us love one another, because love comes from God, and everyone who loves has been born from him and knows him.
(1 John 4:7)

John, the author of the letter, lovingly exhorts his brothers in Christ to love one another. Why? Because if they had been born of God and had been transformed by him, they knew the source of true love and that should be noted.

The verse goes on to assert that the one who loves is born of God and knows God. When the Bible talks about knowing God, it does not refer to knowing something about him but to having a personal relationship with him. That close relationship transforms life. A heart surrendered and submitted to God does not remain the same but resembles God more every day.

For this reason, when God (who is love) reaches us, we learn to love our brothers and sisters and all of humanity. We receive God’s love in our hearts and his love flows through us to our brothers in Christ and to all those around us.

1 John 4:8, the essence of God

1 John 4:8

He who does not love does not know God, because God is love.
(1 John 4:8)

On the other hand, it is obvious that those who do not love have not had a real encounter with God. God is love, so everyone who knows him and has a personal relationship with him is touched by his love and will show that love to his neighbour. Although it is a slow process, the change will be seen because the desire of the heart will be to become more like Christ.

We might think that all people love someone and yes, it may be true. But with what kind of love? These verses are not referring to superficial love based on emotions or desire, which is so common in our society. God’s love is sacrificial, unconditional love, a love in action that has been willing to give everything in order to rescue us from eternal death as we read in verse 9.

1 John 4:9, the expression of God’s love

This is how God manifested his love among us

This is how God manifested his love among us: in that he sent his only begotten Son into the world so that we might live through him.
(1 John 4:9)

God’s love is not only in words. It is a love put into action that has been shown to humanity since the beginning. God manifested his love in a forceful way by sending his Son Jesus Christ into the world so that we can have eternal life through him. And how did he obtain for us that eternal life? Dying on the cross in our place. Jesus, who did not commit sin, received the punishment that we deserved.

He who did not commit any sin, God treated him as a sinner for us, so that in him we might receive the justice of God.
(2 Corinthians 5:21)

God took our place so that we can spend eternity with him. That’s love!

For God loved the world so much that he gave his only begotten Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but have eternal life. God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save it through him.
(John 3:16-17)
