The sin against the Holy Spirit is the only offense that God does not forgive. Who sins against the Holy Spirit is guilty of eternal death before God. Many times we fall into this situation consciously or unconsciously, without knowing the consequences that we are entailed by it.

Today we are going to understand this truth that will transform our view of the Holy Spirit and learn to give him the glory due to his name. Let us see how to avoid sin against the Holy Spirit:

Who is the Holy Spirit?

The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity, he is a true and eternal God together with the Father and the Son, who deserves the same adoration as the Father and the Son (1 Jn 5.7). He was the one who ordered the creation as we know it (Ge 1.2): Of the same glory and hierarchy as the Father and the Son, he is in function the third person of the Trinity.

He convicts the world of sin, restraining it from total perversion. Of justice, because he testifies to them of the work of Christ and of the risks of not accepting him as Savior; and judgment, because it teaches us that Satan has been judged, our Lord Jesus Christ ascended to heaven and from there he will come to judge the entire universe, including Satan and his demons, the living and the dead (Jn 16.7- eleven).

In such a way that the work of the Holy Spirit in the world becomes crucial in the development of morality, restraining the sin of one against another on earth and avoiding the chaos that humanity would experience without his presence in society.

The Holy Spirit allows the development of science, the arts, and the laws that govern this world for the common good. He is the preserver of order and justice in the world forever.

The presence of the Holy Spirit regulates the times of the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ for the final universal judgment. As long as the Holy Spirit is not removed from the world, God’s judgment will wait for its proper time.

The Bible says that on the day of final judgment the Holy Spirit will be removed and then the wrath of God will be poured out without mercy and implacably on this universe that did not accept the work of the Holy Spirit and blasphemed him.

The Holy Spirit is the one who instills faith in the believer, the gift of believing, and confessing the work of Christ for us, and unlike the world, this faith in the believer makes him a participant in all the benefits we receive from the work of Jesus Christ in favor of believers.

The forgiveness of sins, perfect justice, and eternal life in Christ, are benefits that can only be availed through the faith that the Holy Spirit instills in us.

The Holy Spirit comforts us, understanding comfort not as an act of sympathy with the person who suffers tribulation, but as the reasoning process by which we obtain something positive from a negative circumstance, and that something positive gives us the strength and the firmness to move forward even in the midst of such difficulties. We are empowered by the Holy Spirit to exercise our gifts and talents both in church and in society, and he will dwell with us eternally.

What is the sin against the Holy Spirit?

The sin against the Holy Spirit is blasphemy. Let’s take the word blaspheme as defame or insult, in this case, those who defame, insult or speak disparagingly of God or the sacred. The Bible says that when Christ was on the cross people insulted him blaspheming him (Mr 15.29; Lk 23.39).

The Lord Jesus Christ spoke of blasphemy against the Holy Spirit as The sin against the Holy Spirit that is unforgivable. And he said it on the occasion when he cast a demon out of a boy (Mat 12.22-30; Mr 3.20-30).

After having healed the boy, the Pharisees said that Jesus cast out demons by the power of Beelzebub, the prince of demons, and after refuting their position, he warned them that all the sins that man could commit will be forgiven. , but the sin against the Holy Spirit, the blasphemy against it, would never be forgiven, and the reason was because it cannot be attributed that the works of God are done by Satan or his demons.

This statement has no forgiveness in this life or in the life to come (Matt 12.31-32). The evangelist Mark closes the episode saying that Jesus had pronounced these words because they had said that he had an unclean spirit and that by the power of that spirit he could cast out other demons (Mr 3.30).

How do you sin against the Holy Spirit?

One sins by blaspheming against him. Blaspheming is insulting or speaking ill of someone. It is spoken in a slanderous manner and with the intention of defamation. This is how the Jews spoke of Jesus when he was on the cross (Mat 27.39). It is also blasphemed when you speak ill of what is sacred (Rom 2.24). Both of these things occur when blasphemy is committed against the Holy Spirit, the only unforgivable sin.

The sin against the Holy Spirit consists in attributing his works to demons. In the case of Jesus (Mar 3.20-30), the Jews said that Jesus cast out demons because he had an unclean spirit and by the power of those spirits, ignoring the fact that Jesus was begotten by the Holy Spirit, and that his miracles He did it by the power of the Holy Spirit, and that his life was totally ruled by the Holy Spirit.

The point of the Jews was to discredit the person and work of Jesus, which constitutes blasphemy against the sin against the Holy Spirit, the only unforgivable.

Why is the sin against the Holy Spirit so crucial?

Because it denies the work of the Holy Spirit in us, and to deny the Holy Spirit is to deny God.

To deny the work of the Holy Spirit is to deny God in all his aspects. Deny his person and his work in us. The acts of creation, redemption, sanctification, and glorification are eliminated de facto when we deny the work of the Holy Spirit.

Today we find various so-called scientific theories that try to demonstrate a creation without God, they say that although there are missing links to be scientifically proven, they never manage to fill those gaps, without understanding that they are scientifically impossible. However, society prefers to believe in these theories of creation in order to deny the work of God.

Another part has been from the beginning to deny the deity of Jesus Christ, to deny that Jesus had two natures in one person: human nature and divine nature, for which various theories were invented in the past, each one more witty and scattered. what others. Today the new age says that every religion is part of a path to reach God.

Various methods are acquired from Eastern religions to achieve holiness and spiritual peace. Aliens are part of this existential fauna that tries to live without the presence of God in the world, ignoring that the Lord Jesus Christ said that he was the way, and the truth, and the life; and that no one could go to the Father except through him.

Because it shows a deplorable spiritual condition.

The teaching of our Lord Jesus Christ regarding what the sin against the Holy Spirit is, tells us that these people have satanic influences to deny the evident things that are the product of the eternal counsel of God. They are demonstrating spiritual blindness, and a condition bereft of divine knowledge and light, and therefore hopeless.

It is not about denying the work of God in a moment of doubt and uncertainty. It is a rebellious, stubborn, and constant attitude in terms of recognizing God in all his acts, they will never bow before him nor will they give him glory for it.

This attitude can come disguised as intellectualism, science, humanism, or other religions, but deep down they have the same motivation, to deny God in all his acts of creation, redemption, sanctification, and glorification and to rebel against his wise advice, his paternal love. and his will upon us to choose to walk in our own ways and with our own sins and miseries. This is the real Satanism influencing such people.

Thus we can see that the sin against the Holy Spirit is the only unforgivable one, and worthy of God’s eternal damnation towards those who practice it.

How should we behave so as not to fall into the Sin Against the Holy Spirit?

To avoid the sin against the Holy Spirit, we will not talk about restrictions, but about the positive evaluations that we must adapt in our daily behavior and that will help us to eradicate any attempt in our hearts to fall into the sin against the Holy Spirit. Let’s see 4 things that we must take into account to avoid sin against the Holy Spirit:

1. Recognize God in the work of his creation.

Psalm 19.1 says that the heavens tell of the glory of the Lord, and the firmament shows the work of his hands. Creation itself shows in its character the hand of the Creator. A glorious and infinite creation, full of wisdom and purposes, is what we can contemplate at each sunrise, in the beautiful images of the universe of our planet and its nature, fauna, and flora.

Each created thing shows the power and wisdom of God, even the human being in the most intimate of his body. The perfection of creation speaks of the perfection of the Maker of it. We cannot avoid contemplating the universe and praising God for the greatness of his work

in creation. This revelation is given to all men and there are no excuses in them to deny God in his works (Ro 1.20)

2. Recognize the Work of Jesus Christ in our redemption.

We cannot consider God without considering ourselves, and we cannot consider ourselves without considering God. we are the pinnacle of God’s creation, made good and perfect to live before him, to be loved by him and to give him glory for it, loving out of obedience and obeying out of love. But our parents Adam and Eve did not understand it that way, and they rebelled before God, being thrown out of his presence and corrupting his nature in himself (Gen Chap. 3).

Therefore we are slaves of sin and guilty of condemnation. But God in his infinite love for us sent his Son Jesus Christ to fulfill the obedience that we could not and to die for our sins on the cross, paying with his death for each one of them.

This momentous fact should lead us to confess him as our Lord and Savior and embrace these benefits of his crucifixion with the faith that they also apply to each of us personally.

That is why we are called to confess with our mouth that Jesus Christ is Lord and believe in our hearts that God raised him from the dead, as a confession of faith for our salvation and reconciliation with God (Ro 10.9-10).

Thus, by recognizing the work of Jesus Christ for us we avoid sin against the Holy Spirit.

3. Recognize the work of the Holy Spirit and our sanctification.

The apostle Paul in his letter to the Corinthians assures that whoever confesses Christ as his Savior and accepts him as his Lord, receives the presence and company of the Holy Spirit (1 Cor 6.17).

The Holy Spirit in the life of the believer leads him into all truth. He instills in you the faith to appropriate all the benefits of Christ’s work, enlightens you to understand the Word of God, and guides you in its fulfillment. He brings you into fellowship with other believers, gives you the conviction that you are the son of God, and assures you of the promise of eternal life. There is no way to deny the work of the Holy Spirit in the believer.

We must experience and enjoy this work in every act of our lives as a way to drive away from our people the possibility of committing the sin against the Holy Spirit.

4. set our sights on the future, on the glorious return of our Lord Jesus Christ to gather his people eternally in glory.

We must recognize the events of the future as God’s plan for his creation and not as an accumulation of circumstances that lead to new situations as a consequence of these primary causes. The history of humanity is a divine design that inevitably goes to its destiny fulfilling what God has determined for it.

God has told us where we come from, what we are, and where we are going. And we go to the presence of him. The Holy Spirit reveals to us through the Bible that we are awaiting the glorious return of Jesus Christ, who will come to gather his people to live eternally in the presence of his glory.

He bears witness to our spirit of this glorious truth, that both those of us who are alive and those who have died with the conviction of being children of God destined for eternal life are going to be transformed into glorified bodies to live eternally with our God in the glory.

This must produce in each believer sufficient strength, motivation, and confidence to live a life pleasing to the Holy Spirit, giving Him glory and honor in every act of our lives from now and forever.

Thus, we will avoid committing the worst of sins. The sin against the Holy Spirit.

Final Words: Bretheren, let us not let our lives be guided by immediate circumstances, nor attribute the works of God to those who do not deserve it. Let’s not change the established for the circumstantial. God is God in the whole universe, and all works of blessing are due solely and exclusively to him. We are rebellious, blind, or obtuse to deny the obvious. Let us render with our lives the glory that God deserves, and thus we will forever avoid the sin against the Holy Spirit. God guide us! Amen.
