Raiment in the Bible
It is important to know what fashion is and what the Bible says about clothing and its importance for each occasion. Fashion is the use or custom that is popular in a certain region and for some time.
Many people live pending fashion, and to stand out every day by wearing the latest trend. But we Christians have another perspective, another mentality about it.

What is fashion?

Fashion can also be defined as a mechanism that regulates people’s decisions regarding what to consume, what clothing to wear, and what to do. It can become a social pressure. For example:

  • Fashion technology: Having the most recent cell phone.
  • Listen to a certain type of music.
  • Have a fashionable car.
  • Go to exclusive restaurants.
  • Certain attitudes that are in fashion.
  • One particular phrase that everyone uses.

Does God care how we dress?

Social status always marked a difference between clothing and fashion acquired by people at different times. And although many may not believe it, God cares a lot about our way of dressing. We can see it from the beginning of the Bible:

The Lord God made clothing of furs for the man and his wife, and clothed them.

Genesis 3:21 (NIV)

When we understand that we are God’s creatures, we try to behave according to how He wants us to dress and behave. It is a code of conduct that is primarily for our well-being.

The type of clothing we wear, more than covering our body, more than being in a certain fashion or protecting ourselves from the weather, reveals our heart, as it says in:

From the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.

Matthew 12:34 (NIV)

What the bible says

The Bible also highlights that the way they dress can tell us a lot about people:

  • Genesis 38:19 a widow who by covering her face in a certain way was taken for a prostitute.
  • 2 Samuel 13:18 Tamar wore a very elegant tunic because that is how the virgin princesses dressed.
  • Matthew 22: 11-12 one of the guests was questioned because he was not wearing the wedding garment.
  • 1 Timothy 2: 9 Paul indicates how Christian women should dress.

Today, trousers are allowed in churches and they are a little more flexible with the dress of those attending services. But we must always keep in mind, more than fashion; what the Bible says about fashion and remembering modesty, modesty, and good taste when dressing. And not just to go to church, but for everyday life.
