What does the word tattoo mean?

The word Tattoo comes from the word “Tatau” which means “Mark”, and is incorporated into Spanish through the French word “Tatouage”.

    grace of God

Where do tattoos come from and what is their meaning?

According to historical data, the ancient Egyptian culture used tattoos for ceremonial purposes, to worship what they called gods.

On the other hand, among Greek and Roman cultures, tattoos were used to demonstrate military hierarchy, social position, or simply to demonstrate ownership of a slave.

In Asian culture, the tattoo has its origin in the year 1,000 BC, when it began to enter the trade routes of India, China, and Japan. But the most relevant thing is that in Japanese culture the tattoo was used as a way to mark criminals, or later used by the mafia called the Yakuza, as a symbol of bravery and loyalty to the mafia.

In Native Americans, tattooing was a symbolic rite, associated with the religious and magical world. While in Central America it was a practice used by the Aztecs who tattooed images of those they considered their gods.

What does the Bible say about tattoos?

Analyzing what we read previously we can realize that tattoos have a dark origin, based on worshiping what these ancient cultures called gods, but which the Bible calls demons ( Deut 32:17; 1 Cor 10:20 ).

For this reason, the Lord made it very clear to the people of Israel that those signs or marks that pagan nations were imprinted on the skin, was a cult of their dead idols.

Do not cut your bodies for the dead, and do not mark your skin with tattoos. I am the Lord. ( Leviticus 19:28 ).

As Christians, being washed by the blood of Jesus Christ, we cannot participate in the things of the world and the things of God at the same time. Because the Bible teaches that the end of this practice was the worship of dead idols or demons.

You cannot drink from the cup of the Lord and from the cup of demons, too. You cannot eat at the Lord’s Table and at the table of demons, too. ( 1 Corinthians 10:21 ).

Today, it cannot be possible that a person calling himself Christian or Christian (follower of Christ), has desires in his heart to print these satanic signs, which go against the will of God. Therefore, this implies two things: “his spiritual life is dead (no prayer, no reading of the word)” or “he has never been born again. “

As obedient children, do not conform to the wishes that you previously had while being in your ignorance; but, as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your way of living; for it is written: Be holy, for I am holy ( 1 Peter 1: 14-16 ).

On the other hand, if you already came to Christ with tattoos on your body, you don’t have to worry, it is not necessary to remove them because God already sees you as a new and clean man.

So if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, they are all made new ( 2 Corinthians 5:17 ).

In conclusion, the Bible tells us “Glorify God in your body” ( 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 ). Therefore, let us guard our bodies because it is the temple of the Holy Spirit.

Do you not know that you are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? If anyone destroys the temple of God, God will destroy him; for the temple of God, which you are, is holy ( 1 Corinthians 3:16-17 ).
