What Does the Bible Say About Insurance?

I remember a story a man shared with me years ago about what he called God’s “answered prayer”. While he was away, this man’s car had been badly damaged in an airport parking lot. Unfortunately, the driver who did the damage did not leave a note, and the man whose car was struck did not have collision insurance. So he drove the damaged car for several weeks.

Then one day, while stopped at a red light, he was rear-ended in a multi-car collision. His car suffered minimal damage from this collision, but he decided it would be wise not to mention the airport incident to the insurance companies. His car was fixed by the insurance company of the motorist who rear-ended him. “What an answer from the Lord!” he exclaimed.

Here’s the problem. This “response” from God is contrary to what his word really says. “ The Lord hates those whose hearts are wicked, but he delights in those whose ways are faultless ” (Proverbs 11:20).

    Attitude

This man’s “miracle” story is not unusual: many people view these incidents as some kind of provision, and often feel justified in their misguided thinking because “those insurance companies are just firing people anyway.”. For them, the company is just a company: impersonal and rich. They don’t think about the people within that company so they don’t feel like one person is cheating on another.

    what the bible says

But as Christians, we know that we must live and act differently than the rest of the world. We believe that all our resources belong to God, not to us. Therefore, the resources that are under the control of an insurance company are still God’s. This means we are responsible for how they are spent on us just as much as if the funds came from our own savings account.

“ The justice of the upright delivers them, but the unbelievers are bound by evil desires ” (Proverbs 11: 6).

    Provision

The Bible never says, “You’ll never have to face difficult and unfair circumstances, and even if you do, he promised to make sure you don’t have to pay for it.” NO! He says: “ I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have problems . But cheer up! I have overcome the world ” (John 16:33)

It also says: ” The prudent see danger and take refuge, but the simple continue and pay the penalty ” (Proverbs 27:12).

The Bible teaches provision, not protection.

God wants us to be responsible, but too often we use insurance to turn our responsibilities over to someone else.

This also means that we often turn our trust away from God and toward an insurance company.

    Reasons to be Insured

Insurance can be used to provide excessive potential loss. It can help a family when a major illness or disability occurs. It can provide income for the loss of a spouse, pay medical bills, and help repair a damaged home.

When the loss of another person must be considered, such as with car liability coverage, insurance is vital. As Solomon said: ” The prudent man sees evil and hides, the naive proceed and pay the penalty ” (Proverbs 22:3).

A trusted, independent insurance agent can help you make the right decision. Remember that the Bible tells us to seek wise counsel, so look for an agent who has his interests at heart, not his own. Get referrals from people you know well, then make sure the agent fully outlines the insurance plan. Compare prices and remember… ” in a multitude of advisers wisdom is found ” (Proverbs 24:6)

Insurance is a way to provide responsibility for the people you love. Plan well so you can live simply and give generously.
