24 Best Powerful Prayers for Unity in the World

On this post are 24 Powerful Prayers for Unity in the World

Do we live In a world that seems so divided, today, the word unity does not carry meaning any longer? Such a word once indicated a sense of togetherness, solidarity, or oneness between people, it is important to pray to God for peace-filled unification with these 24 powerful prayers for unity.

Through the years the definition of the word, ”unity” hasn’t changed, and the word continues to be used in public discourse, but our politicians, community leaders, online influencers, even ourselves, we all use the word without meaning. We utter calls for unity while simultaneously speaking words of division. We call for people to listen to us while talking over them. We call for justice while acting unjustly. We call for peace while causing a riot. Even in the church, we claim to desire unity, while setting different standards of behavior for others, never ourselves. We say we’re right and they’re wrong. They need to change, not us. Are we defining unity with our own definition or with the meaning given to us through Scripture?

“I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought.” (1 Corinthians 1:10)

Today there is ample supply of division. Simply name the subject and you can easily find two people holding different stances. However, being a part of Christ means seeking unity not division. While we will always have our differences in opinions about various issues, Christians should aim to have more unity than division. We should aim to be in agreement about major topics like abortion, divorce, and the importance of family, not disagreement. Only through Christ does humanity have an understanding of what unity means in truth, not opinion. If we can heed the words of Scripture then we can evoke unity amongst ourselves, and from there affect our community, city, state, nation, and world. Change is possible and our first step on this path is to enter into prayer.

Communicating with God allows us to take direction on how we should best go about improving ourselves, and thus impacting those around us. The need for unity is real today, and very possible. Here are 24 powerful prayers for unity.

Bible verses for a Christian family

A Prayer for Unity in Families

Heavenly Father,
I know that I am not alone in witnessing the brokenness of families today. Divorce is as common as marriage, and thus many children are not growing up without both biological parents. Some children observe their parents in and out of multiple relationships, leaving them with a sense of instability. Then they grow up and continue the same cycle. On top of that, vulnerability is at an all-time low. When we have issues with one another, we don’t seek to mend wounds. Instead, we gossip and hold grudges. This behavior fractures relationships and leaves no hope of repair. The moment there is conflict, relationships are seemingly over instead of lending themselves to reconciliation. If the relationship does continue, the issue goes unaddressed. We pretend like nothing happened, though we feel just the opposite.

If we want to change, then we have to start by being honest. And if we are, to be honest with you, then we have to start by being honest with ourselves. So I come before you now, asking you to make me better, a better parent, child, relative. Help me to lose sight of my own way and focus on loving others the way you have called me to do. This means forgiving others as I hope to be forgiven, reconciling when necessary, and finding peace with others. Help me to foster a Christian family dynamic, something emblematic of what you desire for all of us. I pray that I can be the change that I wish to see in my family. Help me to practice healthy communication, vulnerability, honesty, and any other traits that I may be lacking. The more I become like your son, the more stability I pray you to help my family find.

Change is possible, and for that reason, I know we can be unified. Help us to get there, God. Amen.

Prayer for Unity in My Family

Oh, Jesus, my Great Healer, my heart is heavy. I am grieved with how my family is right now: dissonant and apart. Family is one of Your greatest gifts and You intended families to be united. On behalf of my broken family, I beg for a new unity. Heal old hurts and mend fractured relationships. Bring Aunts and Uncles, Cousins and Grandparents, and all the members of my precious family together in Your love. May we be united as a restored family. In the name of Your Son, Jesus. Amen.

Prayer for Unity Before Starting a Mission Project

Sovereign Lord, You have called us to make disciples to the ends of the earth. You are with us, and You wanted us to work together. I pray for this group as we go to serve You in a new context. Give us a single purpose and instill in us a conviction and passion for living out Your command to love one another. Should be there be trial, may our unity not falter. Should there be a success, may our joy be in the fact that we supported one another. Bind us together in the love of Christ. Amen.

A Prayer for Unity in the Government and Media

Dear God, How can I not feel dismayed when I turn on the news?
No matter the topic, the two major political parties are at odds. News stations blast opinion instead of journalism. Interviews function more like interrogations, where people argue and talk over one another. Sadly, these political quarrels have boiled over into everyday living. Now everyday citizens divide themselves based on what they see through the media. I’m reminded by God that we judge by what we see, but you judge by what’s truly in our hearts. Please help us to start being more like you. Show us the error of our ways – being quick to judge and taking no time to talk to people who disagree.

In Romans 8:28, Scripture says that we are all sinners. If this is true, and Scripture is true, then please help us to be aware that everyone is flawed. If everyone is flawed then we are all wrong in our thinking about something. No one has life completely figured out. I pray that you would touch the hearts of our politicians, those in the media, that you would reveal this truth to them. I ask that you help them be genuine in their calls for unity. Let their words be spoken and received not just by those who already agree with them, but by everyone. Please show them the benefits of compromising with others, and through the compromise help them to mature and grow in their thinking. I pray that our politicians and media members trade in their animosities for something much more positive.

The government and our culture may be fostering division now, but we can change this. God, you can change this. Show us the way. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

A Prayer for Unity between People

Lord, Please hear this urgent prayer. I and all of my fellow citizens are in desperate need of your intervention. The issue of race has reemerged and boiled over. Though racism appears differently today, the issue is still the same. Our society is teaching children to focus on skin color, not on character. Some are labeled victims, and others as oppressors. God, these are not the labels you have given, but labels many of us have adopted nonetheless.

Help us to see differently. While we may all look different there is only one race – the humans that you created. Can you help more people come to that realization? Yes, there are differences in skin color, height, eye shape, and other areas, but God these differences are not the byproduct of us being different types of humans. We just eat differently, have different genetics, and live in different regions of the world. Still, we use these differences as reasons for division.

God, there is also the issue of the past, where the idea of the race first emerged. Lord, there are those who want to hold people accountable for sins they never committed. We are sinners, and some of us are genuinely misguided. I pray that you would help your people to not focus on the past, but the present. The sins of our fathers are not for us to carry. Let this truth change us.
Let your Word bring unity among the people. Make us wiser, more loving, more caring, and definitely more forgiving. Amen.

A Prayer for Unity in the Church

God, When I think of places lacking in unity, the church is not the first thing I imagine. Yet, today the church is full of division. Whether the topic is racial reconciliation, same-sex marriage, or abortion, churches are not of the same beliefs. God, how can we be of the same body but cling to different beliefs? How can we read the same text and have such drastically different takeaways? Are we interpreting the Bible the way we want or are we genuinely confused? Whatever the answer, I pray that you would help the church as a whole find unity on these various issues. Help us to be clear on what is an issue of the church or an issue of the culture or politics. While each is worthy of prayer, I ask that you would help us to be clear about what is most important. Some solutions we can find in church, others are up to our political leaders.

Where the church must be responsible, I pray you would guide us in making decisions based on your Word, not our preference. If we can find unity in you, surely we can find less division amongst ourselves. You are the truth, God. Amen.

A Prayer for Unity with God

Father, As a Christian, the only way for me to be a positive and divine influence on others is to first find unity with you. Oftentimes I struggle day to day, trying to decide if I am going to live for you or for myself. I pray that each and every day you help me to make the right decision. Help me to deny any ungodly desire, and to always say yes to your will. When you want me to follow, help me to follow. When you want me to listen, help me to listen. While I may not always agree with your will or even understand, God your ways are not my own, You are the almighty, all-knowing, and all-seeing. Not me, God. Help me then to better trust you. Help me to understand just how much you care for me.
And as I grow closer to you, Lord, I pray that you and I will be all the more unified. Amen.

Prayer for Racial Harmony

Compassionate and Gracious God, all tribes and tongues will one day acknowledge Jesus as Lord. Alongside this, we know the truth proclaimed in Your Word that we are all created in Your image. Too easily we allow division based on culture, language, or race. Change our behavior and make us united. Let us focus on our shared status as Your creation and unite together over what we have in common and not fracture over how we differ. To You, the Creator of all people, I pray. Amen.

Prayer for Unity in the Community

Righteous Father, You know that we are called into a community of believers who are to have one mind, and that is to glorify You and to make disciples of all nations, even if we’re only able to reach those in our own community. We realized that we cannot possibly have unity in our local community, the church unless Your Spirit has His way with us. Until we are gathered together with one mind, we cannot be as effective as a church as we can be. Until You send Your Spirit, our carnal natures may try to dictate what we think we should do, but please Father, help us to focus on the mission that You have for each one of us, and as one body, we can do more when we are working together and not placing our own opinions above those of others, than when we work alone. Help us to see that Your desire is for us to work together as a body does in doing what You have set before us to do, and I pray for You to open doors for us to walk through, but also that we might also see what we are to do in walking through that door and recognize the work You have purposed for us to do. Truly, we know we must be striving to live a holy life and to make Jesus Christ the center of our lives, and only then can we hope to do anything for His glory, and not ours, and in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, I pray, Amen.

Prayer for One Purpose

Great God in heaven, please help our church that we have one purpose in life and that is to glorify You and Your Great Son, Jesus Christ. Nothing else matters because You have said in Your Word that we will not glorify You in our lives if we are not striving to live in obedience to You and to love one another, which is what we need to do to show the world that our love for one another is how they will know that we are truly Jesus’ disciples (John 13:35). You have testified in Your Word that “everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made” (Isaiah 43:7), should be striving to bring You glory and to not rob You of glory for things that we do and ascribe these works to ourselves.
We must realize that we have nothing that we did not receive from You Lord (1 Cor 4:4), so if we boast, let our church boast only in You for all the marvelous things You have done for us, and that is our prayer and it is in the name of and for the glory of Jesus Christ, in Whose name we pray, Amen.

Prayer for Oneness of Mind

Blessed Father God, You are so good to us, even though none of us deserve Your goodness (Rom 3:10-12), and that You alone are good, and so let us join together in one mind for one express purpose and that is to proclaim Your goodness to those who do not yet know You. Oh, God, that they would know You so that You might extend Your grace to them (James 4:6) that they might be saved. Please help us take heed to Jesus’ Words in praying that we might be one, praying “Holy Father, keep them in your name, which you have given me, that they may be one, even as we are one” (John 17:11), and that should be our prayer too Father. Let us be of one mind and have one purpose and that is to glorify You and to tell others that there is only one way that they might be saved, and that is through the Person and work of Jesus Christ (Acts 4:12).
Let us join hands and hearts in this single purpose for us to all have one mind and a mind that is focused on You for The work that You have prepared beforehand for us to do (Eph 2:10), and it is for this that we pray in the precious name of Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

Prayer for Mission

Holy God, most reverenced above all, Please help us to focus on the mission You have given us all, and that mission is to reach the lost and to make disciples of all with whom we come into contact, and to teach them the same things that You taught Your disciples (Matt 28:19-20) and by their writings in Your Word, that we may be taught these very same things. Oh Lord, Your Word stands forever, so let us put feet on our faith in doing what You have commanded us to do, and that is to help the poor, the widows and orphans (James 1:27), but also to visit the sick and those in prison, and to welcome into the family those who are strangers among us (Matt 25:34-35), because we understand that what we do for the least of these, we are really doing it for You (Matt 25:40), but also what we don’t do for others, we are not doing for You Lord (Matt 25:45). I know You take these marching orders seriously, so let us invest our lives into doing what You have commanded us to do, but always doing it for Your glory and not ours, and in the precious name of the Lamb of God, Jesus Christ, Amen.

A Prayer for Unity among Global Believers

Lord, my Way Maker, You have saved us and have called out people from every part of the globe. I pray for unity between all Christians. As persecutions, troubles, and dangers come, may the saints be aware of how they can pray, love, and support one another. Our bond in Christ transcends cultures, borders, and nationalities: we have citizenship in heaven. As such, I pray for unity across all believers as we seek to proclaim You to the nations. In Jesus’ wonderful name. Amen.

Prayer for the Body

God, my Father, You have placed each one of us in the Body of Christ, the church, as it has pleased You and not us. Help us to recognize that it is You Who have organized Your church and have placed each one of us exactly where we need to be to do Your work and for Your glory. If we can respect those who some might consider being in a less-than-honorable position, then we can understand that even those who seem to be less in the body are actually those who are more honorable in Your eyes, just as Paul said that the “parts of the body that we think less honorable we bestow the greater honor, and our unpresentable parts are treated with greater modesty” (1st Cor 12:23).
We know that You have no greater respect or regard for one person over another, so help us to not have a higher regard for some and not for others (Acts 10:34), and for what we ourselves have been called to do for You. This is all about You Lord and not about us, so help us to prioritize our calling within the body and to respect all members as the same, as You also do, and in the name above all names, Jesus Christ, I pray, Amen

Prayer for a sick family member and friend

10 Powerful Prayers for Unity in All Circumstances

Mostly in times of greatest need, we may find ourselves giving way to the stress and strain by battling one another; forgetting who the real enemy is. Harsh words spoken, friendships broken; we choose sides and draw lines. Feelings get hurt. Betrayal runs deep. It gets harder to forgive and keep moving forward. And sometimes we get stuck, right there in the broken mess of it all.

Yet it’s in those very times of tension and struggle that we need, more than ever, to come together as one. Unified and strong.

And we can be assured, it’s in those times that Satan is fighting the hardest. He knows that we’re stronger together as we encourage one another. He’s aware that we’re courageous and brave when we’re covering one another in prayer for unity. He understands that the unity of believers through the power of Jesus Christ is a force to be reckoned with. For it’s far too hard to tear apart a cord of three-strand which can’t be easily broken.

One thing is true: The enemy fights the hardest when he knows we’re making a difference. Don’t let him win. He gains momentum when forgets that he’s the cause. For when we’re able to look beyond our disagreements and set aside our differences, we can look to the greater purpose in this life. To honor Christ as King. We’ll never agree on everything. And that’s never been the real goal anyway.

“Let all that you do be done in love.” (1 Corinthians 16:14)

For perfect love, which comes from Christ, casts out all fear. That’s what gives us the power to move forward, propelled with His strength, surrounded in peace, eyes on the One who gives us breath each day. All that you do. All that you say. All that you stand for. Let’s do it with love.

Even in every dark and broken place, for the times we feel like we’re barely making it through, give us your joy Lord, your grace, and the powerful presence of your peace.

We pray for all those in authority, for every leader of our nation, that you would give them your wisdom and discernment as they lead. We pray that their hearts would be directed first to you, that they would recognize where their true help and strength come from. We ask that you guard their coming and going, that you would be their refuge and their peace.
