One of the most beautiful prayers of the Catholic Church is the Angelus prayer, which consists of recalling the moments of the Annunciation and the Incarnation of the Word. For this reason, today we bring you this text in the English version and the Latin version, and in addition, we provide you with information so that you know everything related to this beautiful prayer.
What does the Angelus prayer consist of?
It is mainly a text that, as we mentioned before, refers to the previous moments of the life of Jesus Christ, our Lord. When the Angel Gabriel announced himself to the Virgin Mary to give her the good news that she would conceive the son of God. In these moments, the angel addressed Mary and said: Rejoice, full of grace, the Lord is with you.
Next, the Angel told Mary: The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most High will cover you with its shadow; therefore he who is to be born will be holy and will be called the Son of God. Before this request, the Virgin responded as follows: Here is the slave of the Lord; Let it be to me according to your word.
Therefore, this prayer consists of a prayer in honour of the mystery of the Divine Incarnation and also takes words from the Gospel itself.
It should be noted that it turns out to be a very short prayer, which you can perform daily. In the case of the Catholic Church, the time to pray it is at 6:00 a.m., at 12:00 p.m. and finally, at 6:00 p.m. Likewise, the Angelus prayer consists of three texts, which are They are responsible for summarizing the mystery and are recited together with the Ave Maria prayer.
A brief history of the Angelus prayer
Although some people think that this prayer is attributed to the times of Saint Francis, it was not the Saint himself who introduced it to the Catholic Church. Despite the fact that he always practised piety and looked for parishioners to exercise practices similar to this one in particular. Therefore, according to investigations carried out, it was Fr. Benito de Arezzo who, in the year 1250, was in charge of carrying out this noble mission.
Which was executed mainly in the convent of Arezzo, when the beautiful verses of the Angelus began to be sung and recited. Later, this practice began to spread throughout the world and it was not until well into the 14th century that the ringing of bells and prayers in the morning and at noon, respectively, were introduced.
