What does the Bible say about marijuana

What does the Bible say about marijuana?

Now that marijuana is legalized (or at least decriminalized) in more and more parts of the United States and the world, the issue of its morality is becoming more pertinent. To give you an idea, many of us have asked ourselves: “What does the Bible say about marijuana?” For others, it is rather the curiosity to know what it says about our friend of green color. So is marijuana a sin or a virtue?

Is using marijuana a sin?

If you consider yourself a Christian, you may be interested in knowing if it is a sin to participate in the use of cannabis. And even if you are not religious, you may just be a little curious to know what the sacred texts have to say about it.

Unfortunately, it is not very clear whether using marijuana is a sin or not. But certain verses in the Bible can be interpreted as for or against the grass.

Here are some biblical quotes that apparently allude to the debate. Based on the information available, you can decide whether smoking a joint is truly a sin or a virtue.

Marijuana is a virtue

Did you say plants?

And God said: “Behold, I have given you every plant that bears seed that is on the surface of the whole earth, and every tree that bears fruit that bears seed; this will serve you as food… I have given you every green plant for food”. (Genesis 1:29).

Everything that moves and lives will be for maintenance: just like legumes and green plants, I have given you everything. (Genesis 1: 3).

God created all plants for human consumption, and this presumably includes the cannabis plant. Like cocoa beans and coffee plants, we can enjoy the marijuana leaf and experience its effects.

Why does God allow me to suffer: it is one of the facets of life.

Marijuana for medicinal uses

Give strong drink to the perishing, and wine to the bitter in soul. (Proverbs 31: 6).

According to this statement, medical marijuana appears to be allowed as long as the “bitterness of the soul” can refer to anxiety or painful arthritis.

In the middle of the city street, and on either side of the river, was the tree of life, which produces twelve fruits, giving its fruit each month; and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. (Revelation 22: 2).

The tree is not specified, but in fact, it seems to suggest that the leaves of certain trees may be therapeutic and healing.

Because the land that drinks the rain that often falls on it and produces useful vegetation to those for whom it is cultivated receives God’s blessing. (Hebrews 6: 7).

Growing cannabis certainly comes in handy for those who use it.

Marijuana for good relationships

And I will establish for them a plantation of renown, and they will no longer be victims of famine in the land, nor will they suffer any more the insults of the nations. (Ezekiel 34:29).

Marijuana can definitely appease and pacify the “insults of nations.” The only contradictory thing here are the consequent munchies that sadly do not let the hungry escape.

Improves perception

And do not adapt to this world, but transform yourself through the renewal of your mind, so that you can verify what the will of God is: what is good, acceptable, and perfect. Romans (12: 2).

This could be interpreted as an encouragement to “test” and “transform” our gaze and our perspective so that we can become more spiritual people. If smoking marijuana helps you do it, then it must have some virtue.

Marijuana for love

Better is the food of vegetables where there is love than of fattened ox where there is hatred. (Proverbs 15:17).

Marijuana is fine as long as it is smoked with love. NB: Don’t share your joint with a fat ox.

Marijuana is a sin\ A sober mind

Be sober, and be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, like a roaring lion, prowls around looking for someone to devour. (Peter 5: 8).

But you be sober in everything (2 Timothy 4: 5).

This call to sobriety comes up a lot in the Bible. Intoxication, it seems, is a sin, and surely that also includes getting high.

Do not get drunk with wine, in which there is dissolution; Rather, be filled with the Spirit. (Ephesians 5:18).

Here I could be saying that wine is forbidden, but in strong spirits, it is totally fine.

Just kidding, but certainly, the intoxication referred to in the Bible is explicitly related to the consumption of alcohol. Since marijuana has a totally different effect (and usually doesn’t lead to debauchery) it might be fine.

Laziness

The sloth’s desire kills him because his hands refuse to work. (Proverbs 21:25).

The soul of the lazy person desires and achieves nothing (Proverbs 13: 4).

If “lazy” looks like “stoner” we might have a problem here. However, the perception of regular cannabis users is changing radically. Now it has a much more positive connotation, as marijuana is being legalized state by state and globally.

Greed

Don’t be with the wine drinkers or the meat-eaters. (Proverbs 23:20).

This is a warning to both omnivores and stoners. Basically, control and moderation are key to reaping the benefits of marijuana without compromising.

The sin of drunkenness

Do not look at the wine when it is red When its color shines in the glass. It enters smoothly, But in the end, it will bite like a serpent, And like an asp, it will give pain. Your eyes will look at strange things, And your heart will speak wicked things. (Proverbs 23:21).

Kinky expressions tend to occur more often when you’re drunk, but if you tend to swear when you’re high, then you should be careful around the snake.

If we have learned anything here, it is that drunkenness is not a good friend. So if you want to lead a life away from sin, stay away from wine.

Bible Verses

So what does the Bible say about marijuana?

From what can be deduced from the previous biblical verses, the use of marijuana itself is not sinful. Rather, sin arises from intoxication and debauched behavior. As long as you behave yourself, you probably have nothing to worry about.

However, if you are really concerned that marijuana is a sin, it is best to avoid it, as there is no concrete evidence that it is, but also that it is not.

The choice is yours

In any case, the only thing we can all do to be more virtuous is not to judge others, whether they smoke marijuana or not:

He who eats, do not despise the one who does not eat, and he who does not eat, do not judge the one who eats; because God has received him. (Romans 14: 1-23).

So what does the Bible say about marijuana? The Bible seems to point out that if it is used for medicine, food, or moderate joy, that is fine. That said, if used for good, we hardly consider marijuana a sin.

For an overseer, as God’s steward, must be above reproach. He must not be arrogant or quick-tempered or a drunkard or violent or greedy for gain, but hospitable, a lover of good, self-controlled, upright, holy, and disciplined. He must hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in sound doctrine and also to rebuke those who contradict it.

Who are you to pass judgment on the servant of another? It is before his own master that he stands or falls. And he will be upheld, for the Lord is able to make him stand.
