Is watching porn a sin? Among the 10 most visited web pages globally, there are 2 whose content is exclusively pornographic. The high consumption of sexual material has increased over the years, and although there are many who find it unintentionally when they surf the internet, there are millions of regular users. And if there are so many people who watch porn, how can we tell if it is bad?

Some believe that viewing pornography is not a sin because it does not include physical contact with any other person, that is, there would be no adultery or fornication. However, the Bible presents us with concrete points that affirm that pornography is a sin, and not only because it involves the sexual area, but also because it leads to other infractions.

Is pornography a sin?

Pornography is a sin because, first, it leads to committing adultery or fornication. Jesus said:

You have heard the command that says, “Do not commit adultery .” But I say that whoever looks at a woman with sexual passion has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

Matthew 5: 27-28 (NLT)

This means that it is not necessary to touch someone to sin sexually with that person: we are already committing the act just by thinking or wanting to do so. When viewing pornography, you experience a sense of pleasure and satisfaction because it is as if you were participating in the act.

Jesus warned us that we must watch our thoughts because they can lead us to commit sin; And in this case, it also applies to pornography. But that is not the only reason why pornography is a sin, there are others.

Pornography is a form of idolatry

Studies have confirmed that the reason porn is so addictive is that it activates our brain’s reward system. This means that once we see one video, we immediately want to see another and another. This explains why people addicted to pornography are increasing in their taste: they are no longer satisfied with watching intercourse between two adults but want to see extreme manifestations of sex.

When a person has pornography as his priority and thinks of nothing more than watching more videos or images, then he is committing idolatry.

Have no other gods apart from me.

Exodus 20: 3

Idolatry is not only worshiping a statue, idolatry includes everything that replaces the place of God in our lives. Avid consumers of sex videos only seek to satisfy themselves and, in that sense, they make their pleasure their god. Your own satisfaction becomes your source of joy, and that is a clear sign that God is no longer your source of joy or peace; therefore, by viewing pornography they are committing the sin of displacing God.

Pornography incites to ignore the voice of the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit is a gift that Jesus left us; and He is in charge of announcing the truth (John 14:17; 15:26; 16:13). When we do not know what decision to make or if a choice is the correct one, the Holy Spirit is the one who guides us to act according to the truth.

In 1 Thessalonians 4: 1-8, Paul warned about sexual sins, and at the end, he says that whoever “rejects this teaching is not rejecting us, but God himself, who has given you his Holy Spirit.”

Every time someone views pornography, they ignore the Holy Spirit who tells them not to do it; And the more you reject their warnings, the harder it is for you to hear the voice of the Holy Spirit. For this reason, pornography is a sin that leads the individual to turn away from God and leave the purpose that He has for his life.

Viewing pornography is contributing to the sex industry

Watching a video doesn’t seem serious. Downloading it doesn’t seem like a big deal either. But it is.

Recently, one of the largest porn websites was forced to remove most of its videos. The reason? Because many of them were videos of rapes or recorded without the consent of the victims. What does this mean? That only a small part of the pornographic videos are made by actors.

So if a person downloads and shares a pornographic video is committing the sin of robbery and rape sexual. Theft because piracy is distributing and sharing content that does not belong to us, and the Bible warns us not to steal (Exodus 20:15). And rape because by being a consumer of rape videos, the person becomes a perpetrator in their thoughts; and Jesus himself warned severely against it (Matthew 5: 27-28).

How to Recover from Porn Addiction

First, you need to deal directly with your sexual addiction. Take whatever steps are necessary, including the possibility of an inpatient program, or a community-based program such as Sexual Addicts Anonymous or Celebrate Recovery to deal effectively with the sexual addiction. Many find some success with an accountability partner, but this is not likely enough. Consider taking dramatic steps to recover from this serious problem. Until this is done trust cannot be rebuilt.

Second, ensure that you have a thorough program. It has been said that partial measures will not ensure recovery. Drastic measures are needed to deal effectively with this problem. Don’t fool yourself by believing you can solve this problem on your own. Any recovery program must encompass social, psychological, sexual, and spiritual factors—in short, it must be comprehensive. Radical changes in lifestyle are often needed for recovery.

Third, once you have dealt honestly with your addiction, complete with accountability, then you can work on your marriage. Recovery cannot occur alone. Scripture tells us, “Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another.” (Proverbs 27:17) Marriages need support as well. A marriage cannot survive ongoing violations of trust. Recovery cannot occur when there is incredible chaos, deception, and destruction occurring in your home.

Fourth, there must be fearless truth-telling in all matters. Wherever there is an addiction—and our homes are plagued with everyday addictions—there is deception, excuse-making, rationalizing, and other forms of unhealthy communication. Addiction breeds bondage, idolatry, and “crazymaking.” Any recovery process is replete with full transparency and accountability.

In conclusion

Pornography is a sin. Although society labels it as “adult fun,” it is nothing more than sin in disguise. We must be alert and pay attention to what we see because what enters our eyes has an influence on our physical, mental and spiritual health.

Your eye is like a lamp that gives light to your body. When your eye is healthy, your whole body is full of light; But when your eye is sick, your whole body is full of darkness. And if the light you think you have is actually darkness, how dense is that darkness! Matthew 6: 22-23
